Ultrasound

Ultrasounds are performed to assess ovarian activity and endometrial thickness during specific cycle days. The baseline scan is performed on cycle days 1 through 3. The purpose is to check the ovaries for residual follicles and endometrial thickness. Residual follicles are cysts on the ovaries which frequently develop after ovulation induction with medications such as Clomiphene citrate, Repronex, Follistim, Gonal F, etc. The desired size of follicles on these days is less than 15mm with an endometrium of 6mm or less to proceed with a treatment cycle.

In addition, a mid-cycle, day 11 through 13, scan is performed to assess preovulatory follicles as well as the endometrium for thickness. The normal size of a preovulatory follicle is 20 mm or greater if the patient is on Clomiphene and 18 mm or greater if the patient is on gonadotropin therapy. We like to see an endometrial thickness of 7mm or greater. The results of these scans will allow the physician to determine your next treatment step. Additional scans may be performed during the cycle if ordered by your physician.
