Infertility Services, Houston, Texas
Our
infertility clinic is located at 7400 Fannin St., Suite 1180 in
Houston, Texas. Dr. McWilliams offers the full range of infertility
diagnostic and treatment services ranging from the initial diagnosis
to advanced fertility therapies such as in vitro fertilization,
(IVF).
Infertility
has many causes in both males and females and Dr. McWilliams always
conducts a complete infertility evaluation. There is a male
infertility component in approximately 47% of infertile couples.
Dr.
McWilliams has specialized in infertility treatment since he opened
his practice in Houston, Texas in 1988. Most couples become pregnant
using "first level" technologies such as fertility
medications and intrauterine
inseminations. Each couple is offered the infertility treatment
most likely to result in pregnancy at the most reasonable cost.
The
infertility workup will usually reveal one or more causes of infertility.
If an ovulatory disorder is discovered, oral medications such as
Clomid or injectable
follicle stimulating hormone are usually effective. In many cases,
intrauterine insemination (IUI)
will be recommended, especially if there is a problem with the cervical
mucous.
IUI
is also sometimes offered in cases of mild male factor infertility.
The semen is collected, washed and concentrated, and inserted directly
into the uterus. In cases of moderate to severe male factor infertility,
in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection is
recommended.
IVF
is offered in appropriate situations such as in women who fail to
conceive with IUI, older women ("more appropriately" women
with reduced ovarian reserve), in cases of moderate male factor
infertility, when the tubes are blocked or damaged, in cases of
unexplained infertility, and other conditions dependent upon each
couples diagnosis.
Many
women seek reversal of a previous tubal ligation (tied tubes) performed
for birth control. While reversal is sometimes possible, severing
the tubes should be considered a permanent method of birth control.
Whether or not the tubes can be reconnected depends upon many factors
including where and how the tubes were tied and if scar tissue is
present. In general, younger women are better candidates for tubal
reversal because they have time to attempt numerous natural cycles.
IVF is considered a "first line" treatment and offers
higher per cycle success rates than surgical reconnection of the
tubes.
We
offer IVF in conjunction with the Infertility Center of Houston
(located on Katy freeway in Houston Texas) and our IVF success rates
far exceed the national averages. Our embryologist has years of
clinical experience performing delicate micromanipulation procedures
such as ICSI, assisted hatching, preimplantation genetic diagnosis
and others.
Dr.
McWilliams is a skilled infertility
surgeon and completed much of his fertility training at Baylor
in Houston. He often conducts a diagnostic laparoscopy to visually
examine the reproductive organs and many times infertility diseases
such as endometriosis, can be treated during the diagnostic laparoscopy.
Surgery for infertility may include removal of fibroids and/or polyps
from the uterus, insuring that the fallopian tubes are open, correction
of anatomical abnormalities, and many other procedures.
We
also offer treatment for other common female conditions. Our "Articles"
section has more information on these conditions such as menopause,
osteoporosis
and osteopenia.
We have
separate sections of the Web site that discusses each of these topics.
