BOWEL PREPARATION PRIOR TO OPERATIVE LAPAROSCOPY*

PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS

When extensive pelvic scarring (adhesions) is anticipated during the laparoscopy, a mechanical bowel preparation is usual. By cleansing the large bowel of potential infectious contents, risks of infections to the pelvis during operative laparoscopy are minimized. The following instructions are given to you in an effort prepare the bowel for the best results of operative laparoscopy.

1. START TWO DAYS BEFORE SURGERY DAY

Soft diet (cream of wheat, creamed soups, custard, ice cream and anything which is soft and liquid in consistency.)

2. START AT NOON THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY

Clear liquid diet (broth, jello, popsicle, coffee, tea and sodas)

3. START AT 5:00 P.M. THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY

Oral administration of solutions that rapidly cleanse the bowel. Laxatives like Dulcolax, Mag Citrate, Sinekot, etc.

4. You may take any medications your doctor has recommended the evening before surgery but no other meds.

5. Before going to bed, please drink at least 3 additional glasses of clear liquid to help your laxative work properly.

6. Nothing by mouth, drink or eat after midnight.
