Baby
Aspirin Before Conception
"What
is all this about the need for low-dose, "Baby" aspirin
before conception?" "Will it help me become pregnant?"
"Will it decrease miscarriage rates?" "Are there
any pregnancy risks if I take aspirin?"
Today,
lots of questions are being asked by patients regarding the issue
of the need for low-dose aspirin prior to conception. We would like
to inform you of recent studies concerning this issue.
Over
the past decade, numerous studies have supported the finding that
daily maternal treatment with low-dose aspirin is associated with
1) a significant reduction in preeclampsia in pregnancy, 2) less
fetal growth restriction, 3) a higher birth weight, 4) a reduction
in preterm delivery, and 5) a reduction in the rate of miscarriage.
Implantation
failure or early postimplantation loss has always been blamed as
a leading cause of failure in ART (IVF, GIFT) cycles. Screening
for the presence of autoimmune antibodies is recommended by many
IVF centers while other centers recommend empiric treatment with
low-dose aspirin and heparin.
With this information, we now recommend a single baby aspirin daily
for all women trying to conceive.
