Robert McWilliams, MD
Reproductive Endocinologist, Infertility Specialist
Dr.
Robert B. McWilliams, commonly referred to as "Dr. Mac,"
is a native Texan born in Spring Branch, a suburb of Houston. He
is a fellowship trained fertility specialist offering highly personalized
care in Houston, Texas.
He
attended Trinity University in San Antonio as a pre-veterinary student
with an interest in attending Texas A&M School of Veterinary
Medicine.
While
at Trinity, he met his roommate's father, Dr. Chalmers, who was
the Chief Anesthesiologist for the famous heart surgeon, Dr. Michael
DeBakey. Dr. Chalmers helped Dr. McWilliams focus his interests
on pursing a medical degree.
Dr.
Mac attended the University of Texas Health Science in San Antonio
where he attained his medical degree. As his medical interests evolved,
one of his top priorities was to become a primary care provider.
He developed a keen interest in obstetrics and gynecology and decided
to complete a residency at LAC/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.
While
at USC, he worked closely with many specialists, including world-renowned
infertility specialists, ( reproductive endocrinologists ). After
graduation, he established a private practice in obstetrics and
gynecology with three other physicians in Denver, Colorado.
As
his practice in Denver evolved, he became extremely interested in
infertility treatment. He handled most of the practices infertility
cases and quickly became known as the "infertility doctor."
He derived a great deal of satisfaction from helping these couples.
Dr.
McWilliams wanted to provide the highest quality of care available
so he decided to move to Houston and complete a two-year Fellowship
in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (Infertility Specialist
training) at Baylor College of Medicine. Once he completed his infertility
specialist fellowship, he decided to explore his interest in research
and teaching taking an academic position at the University of Texas
Health Science Center in Houston (UTHSCH).
While
at the UTHSCH, he reestablished and directed the In
Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program. Teaching physicians and specialists
was a daily routine that he enjoyed during his time there.
However,
lack of daily patient contact lead Dr. Mac to join an HMO where
he setup the Reproductive Endocrinology Section (Infertility services)
. His belief at the time was that "eventually, all patients
would have to belong to HMOs". After six years, he realized
that he could not provide the quality and depth of care he desired
in a managed care setting.
Nothing
has ever been more important to Dr. McWilliams than providing the
highest quality of care available in an individualized setting.
Understanding this, he realized that he would have to open a private
practice to meet this goal.
Today,
Dr. Mac sees each patient during most of their visits, allowing
time to answer his or her questions. He provides "one on one"
personalized infertility care that is all too uncommon in today's
medical environment. He takes great pride, joy, and satisfaction
in helping each couple realize their dreams of creating families.
